The NeWest TRenD On FacEbOOk!!

Doppelganger week.
What is it, may you ask?
As far as I can tell from my observations, doppelganger week is a week for people to pretend that they are as attractive as someone who pretty much gets paid to be attractive.
Doppelganger week is a week for us a society to feed our absurd, and frankly, unhealthy, obsession with celebrities.
The actual event seems to consist of individuals changing their profile picture to that of a celebrity they wish they looked like...I mean...a celebrity who they look a lot like...twins, really.
It is a week for insecurities to come out in the form of compliment-fishing: "So..this is my doppelganger...recently rated as one of the most beautiful females on earth...I'm not that pretty (I have to say that so I look humble)...but...what do you think? No really...what do you think? (Please don't tell me what you really think, just stroke my ego for a second...yep, right there..ah that hit the spot!)"
Or even better, "Here are 5 gorgeous women (or men, as the case may be). Now tell me which one I look the most like! Even better, tell me I'm prettier/studlier than them all!"
Apparently the "answer 50 questions about me" or "even if our only contact was that time I threw up on you, share something nice about me" memes weren't enough of an ego massage.
Friends..sigh...how can I say this in a way that won't hurt feelings? Most of you are less physically attractive than Jessica Alba (or if you're a man...Hugh Jackman). Sorry if that was a low blow. But here's the thing...most of you have more going for you than they do. I've laughed with you, talked with you till all hours of the night, gone on some of the most spectacular adventures with you. I'd rather hang out with you guys than I would with ANY celebrity. And I believe the same about myself. I believe I am beautiful, but physical attractiveness is a negligible part of that. I am beautiful because God made me, and gave me attributes of divinity: love, joy, fun, confidence, integrity.
You know what...one of my favorite people ever (good old Willy Shakespeare) said this better than me:
My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress when she walks treads on the ground.
  And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
  As any she belied with false compare
So I will be keeping my profile picture. The one where I'm making two dinosaur pb and h sandwiches fight each other. Because that's me. Not Anne Hathaway, or Carrie Underwood, or Kate Hudson. Just Riss. That weird girl who likes to color and go on adventures. And I'm down with that.

  1. Ok, not EVERYONE's doppelgangers are this vain. I've seen some that genuinely made me laugh, and some that really confused me because I wasn't sure if it was my friend or their doppelganger. And that's the real point. I'm just a little amused at the magnitude and the...silliness of this little facebook meme.

  2. So...everyone tells me I'm as hot as Spock's mom from Star Trek. Do you think so??? <3 <3 <3

  3. Ha ha! I almost changed mine to the lovely Sandra Bullock. I filed through countless google images looking for the most attractive, yet the one that would leave people saying, "I definitely see it." Not, "She's way prettier." Then I thought, "This isn't me. I like my profile picture. I'm keeping it." I actually almost did that twice. Now your post confirms my decision. I love you.

  4. I almost changed my picture to Peppermint Patty from Peanuts. A cartoon character, to stick it to the man. That's honestly the only celeb I've ever been told I look like. Maybe I'm just bitter, ha ha. I love you too, Sandra. =)

In which I pen a tribute to my ex-boyfriends

So, I promised a friend I would have something substantial up here by tonight. Another friend told me that I needed to post soon, because...MY READERSHIP! I didn't know I had a "readership" but if I do, I'd hate to disappoint them! So here goes. Lately, I've been getting a lot of questions about whether or not I'm dating anyone, or if I'm still dating "that one guy" (which has been used in reference to both the man I stopped dating about a month ago, and the other fellow I stopped dating over a year ago), or simply condolences that things didn't work out with some relationship or another. These questions and condolences are often coupled with the idea that I'll "find the right guy soon," or "I met my husband right after a break-up," or that "if it isn't right, it isn't right." And while I don't disagree with any of those statements, I also feel that these relationships and subsequent breakups,

In which I share a string of possibly unconnected thoughts.

It's raining outside. Everything is misty, and the mountains are wrapped in heavy white clouds. It makes me homesick for this place: (Can you be homesick for a place that was never your home?)  I think I'm long overdue for some Oregon beach-camping. Hopefully I can make it happen...next summer. In other news, yesterday was Norwegian Independence Day. Which doesn't mean much to me, except that I got to enjoy some good food and good company. I am officially in love with this: Oh, and this: That is all.

In which I iterate a list of things that irk me

The phrase: "Attitude of Gratitude." I don't know why, but it makes me cringe. Every. Single. Time. The Washington Post Social Reader Facebook app. I refuse to download the app because I don't want the entire Facebook community to know that I'm reading about "Beyonce's Incredible, Unique, Miraculous Pregnancy." This means, however, that I get to see all the tantalizing headlines from articles my friends are reading, without being able to read them myself. It's...maddening. Spotify. For similar reasons. Too-long eyelash extensions. Girls, having baby tarantulas attached to your eyelids is not attractive. The dating scene. I would like to either be completely single and romance-less, or have a boyfriend who loves and adores me. None of this going on dates with boys who I don't actually like that much. None of these mini-crushes on menfolk who won't ever reciprocate. As Patrick Henry once said, give me true love or give me asexuality
